The way they were
Here is a picture of the Cliffs the way they were before 1964. This is where the overlook was built in 1964. Over the years, this area has been subject to the distructive forces of nature. This part of the cliffs has mostly eroded away.

Spanish Moss along the Top of the Cliffs
Top of the Cliffs after 6/1957. Notice the granite marker on the left side of trail. This is the marker placed there on June 9, 1957 in appreciation of Lionel Weil. Notice also all the Spanish Moss on the trees. It is still present in the park but not as thick.
