The Raven Rock State Park's First Day Hike starts at 1:00pm and is scheduled to take two hours so come relax after your hike and join us in the classroom for our Carvers Creek Virtual Hike! This program will last about 45 minutes.

We hope this hike inspires you to make state parks a regular part of your exercise routine and your life.
Join a park ranger at Rumbling Bald Climbing Access on January 1, 2013 at 1 p.m. as we hike the newly constructed Rumbling Bald Trail. This trail is 1 mile long (round trip) and leads to the bottom of Rumbling Bald and the east side boulder fields. Along the way we will discuss how the park uses ecological information to reroute old trails and plan new trails. Bring water and wear sturdy hiking shoes.

Crowders Mountain State Park

First Day Hike
Join a statewide and national effort to celebrate parks and healthy living on January 1st. Last year more than 1,000 people joined the new tradition in 28 parks. This year 39 state parks have hikes planned! Our hike will begin in Crowders Mountain State Park in North Carolina and end in Kings Mountain State Park in South Carolina. We will be hiking the Ridgeline Trail. The meeting place will be at the Boulders Access Area at:108-2 Van Dyke Road/Kings Mountain, NC 28086.

Park staff from both parks will lead the point to point hike, with a total distance of approximately 5 miles one way. The hike ends at the Kings Mountain State Park’s day use area. Hikers can then either hike back on their own, or will need to work out a shuttle back. Please note that the park will NOT be able to provide a shuttle back. Please bring drinking water/snacks, suitable clothing and footwear. The hike will be cancelled in the event of rain. If the weather is questionable, please call the Crowders Mountain State Park Office at 704.853.5375 to confirm. Pets are not allowed on this hike.

Meet at the Summit Trail parking lot at 2:30 pm for an invigorating hike to the summit. Dress appropriately for the weather keeping in mind that layering will allow you to regulate your temperature much more easily. Gorges State Park encompasses an area that receives an average of 90 inches of rain per year. This rainfall combined with the rough and steep terrain makes Gorges State Park and Transylvania County one of the best places to view waterfalls in the state of North Carolina and in the eastern United States.
Meet at Bearwallow Picnic Shelter to accompany a Ranger to one of the well known waterfalls of the park, Upper Bearwallow Falls.


The trip is a moderate 1.5mile hike. Please bring water, appropriate outer wear for rain/snow and sturdy footgear.

Grandfather Mountain State Park

Start the year off right with a sensory hike along the first mile of the Profile Trail. Participants will learn to enjoy using their full range of senses to experience Grandfather Mountain State Park. Slow down and experience the journey not just the destination. Hot chocolate will be available after the hike for participants to warm up.

Hiking boots are recommended and come dressed the weather conditions. If you have field guides or binoculars, bring those too.

Five Overlooks Challenge – First Day Hike
Join a park ranger celebrating the New Year by hiking to Hanging Rock State Park’s five main scenic mountain overlooks. This ten mile trail hike will go to Hanging Rock, Wolf Rock, House Rock, Cook Wall, and Moore Knob. This hike will include some strenuous climbs. Breaks will be taken at the overlooks. There will be no facilities along the way. Hikers should come prepared for the winter weather; carry water, lunch, snacks, and personal supplies. Dogs must be leashed. No pre-registration necessary. Hike will be cancelled for unsafe winter road conditions.

Join a ranger Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at the Ebenezer Old Oak Trail for a first-day hike. This is an easy one mile flat loop hike. A good chance to exercise and enjoy learning while having fun in our natural surroundings! All ages are invited, free. Bring hiking shoes and clothes appropriate for the weather. Hike begins and ends at Ebenezer Recreation Area in Area A at the trailhead.

Directions from Apex: Take Hwy 64 west for about 9 miles. At the Wilsonville traffic light turn Left onto Beaver Creek Road. Take Beaver Creek Rd. for about 2 miles. Turn Right into Ebenezer Recreation Area ( big brown sign posted. Once you pass the ticket booth, make the first Right to Area A. Trail begins at display in parking lot. Start your New Year off with a fun, healthy 1st Day Hike along the banks of the beautiful Lumber River. We will get a chance to see what kinds of birds and other wildlife are out and about during the coldest park of our winter. This hike will cover at least six different habitats, from along the river’s edge, then onto Griffin’s Bluff and then to upland habitats at the top of the bluff. Several tips will be given to teach participants to become very good observers of wildlife in the future.

Start off 2013 with a First Day Hike at Mayo River State Park. First Day Hikes are a fairly new tradition and are gaining popularity all across North Carolina. The program is intended to encourage our citizens to enjoy our parks and to become active at the same time. Join in with other Tarheels hiking in their local parks all across the state by coming out to walk with us. We will meet in the parking lot at the Mayo Mountain Access at 11:00 am, and hike the 1.8 mile Mayo Mountain Trail. This is a relatively easy trail, climbing a slight incline for about half the distance, then the trail levels out and then descends back to the parking area. We will be walking at an easy pace, making stops along the way to discuss natural features along the trail, as well as some history of the area and plans for the future of the park. Wear comfortable, sturdy footwear, and dress for the weather.

Merchants Millpond State Park

Join a ranger at Merchant's Millpond State Park's visitor center. We will depart from there, walk a short distance on Lassiter Trail, cross over Millpond Road, & complete Bennett's Creek Trail. This will be a little over 2 miles. If possible wear boots. You can bring binoculars or borrow a pair from the Park. This is a beautiful trail that goes through a hardwood & a pine forest. There is also a boardwalk that goes down to Bennett's Creek.

First Day Hike - Hattaway Mountain Trail
Start off the new year with a short but strenuous 2 mile trek up the steep slopes of Hattaway Mountain, the third highest peak in Morrow Mountain State Park. Hikers will pass through a mature forest of Chestnut Oaks, Sourwood, and Mountain Laurel to attain the peak where they can enjoy the panoramic vistas of the surrounding countryside. The dry, rocky ridgeline that hikers will be traversing is typical of the stony, flinty mountain tops of these old Uwharrie Mountains. Be sure to wear sturdy boots or shoes as the volcanic rock fragments can be sharp and unforgiving.

First Day Hike - Quarry Trail
Join a park ranger for a short, easy, kid-friendly .6 mile hike through the picnic area and along a freshwater creek. Participants will pass under mature hardwoods and majestic pines on the way to explore an old stone quarry, now overgrown with ferns and mosses and American Holly trees. Passing through the quarry, hikers will see the twisted and upturned layers of volcanic rock called argillite that made this place a good site to chisel, dig, and pry up slate which was then used to construct the buildings in the park. Wear sturdy comfortable shoes or sneakers for this one hour tromp through the woods.

Meet the oldest known Longleaf pine in the world(465 Years Old)on this 1.5 mile hike. Learn the history of the Boyd Round Timber tract and the ecology of the Longleaf pine. We will meet at Weymouth Woods Visitor Center and carpool four miles to the Boyd Round Timber Tract. Bring bottled water, binoculars, and cameras.

Umstead State Park and will have an interesting lesson on mills at the site of the old Company Mill. Space is limited to 20 participants and requires pre-registration.
